You may have heard the saying, “It takes 21 days to form a new habit,” but did you know that this saying is regularly misquoted? The correct quote is, “It takes at least 21 days to form a new habit.” This idea was formed from a series of anecdotal observations made by Maxwell Maltz (a plastic surgeon) when noting how long it took his patients to adjust to the changes in their appearance after surgery. This saying is often quoted as a fact, when in reality, habit formation is a bit more complex. Phillipa Lally (a health psychology researcher at the University College of London) and her team took on the quest to find out how long habit formation actually takes. From Lally’s studies, on average, people take 66 days - or more - to form a new habit. In her work, Lally noted that the participants took anywhere from 18 days to 254 days to form a new habit. This means that you should plan to spend anywhere from 2 to 8 months solidifying your habit before it will become second nature. Don’t let that get you down! We’ve got some great tips on how to make your resolution stick.

Tip 1 - Set a Specific Goal

Firstly, set a specific goal. Rather than saying, “I resolve to take more mushrooms this year,” set a specific goal like, “I resolve to take one serving of Turkey Tail Tincture and drink one cup of Chaga tea each morning.” Setting specific goals will help to take the guesswork out of the new routine and sticking with a similar routine each day will help solidify it in your life.

Tip 2 - Set a ‘Cue’

A great way to implement any new habit into your life is to set a cue. Think of it as a waypoint in your day. You never walk out the front door without your keys right? What makes you remember to grab your keys? Is it the door itself? Perhaps your key holder? Setting a cue can help you remember to perform your routine. For me, my cue is heavily tied to WHERE I keep my tinctures. I like to add Lion’s Mane and Fungi Five to my coffee each morning, so I keep those tinctures on a shelf right next to my desk. Then, when I set my coffee on the shelf each morning, my tinctures are right next to it! This is my cue to add the tinctures to my coffee. Your cue will likely look different, it might be tied to a time of day or your order of operations. Maybe you always look at the clock at 11:11 or you always need a pick-me-up at 1 pm, those would be great cues! The idea is to take something you already know about yourself or that you already do each day, and add your mushroom routine to that.

Tip 3 - Sprinkle in some fun

The most important thing is to remember that you want your day to be enjoyable! Don’t make a routine that you dread doing. If you don’t like the strong flavor of tinctures, add them to your favorite morning beverage! If you don’t like making tea, use ChagaNOW instead. Tip 4 - Be Flexible

While getting into the swing of a routine can be important, be flexible about it. Don’t get down about a missed day. You don’t want to accidentally associate your new habit with a memory of beating yourself up for forgetting it. Tip 5 - Look Inward
