How to Use a Shampoo Bar

Jul 30, 2024Kaitlin Lawless

You’ve done the hard work and found the perfect shampoo bar for all your adventuring needs! It’s biodegradable, plastic-free, great for hair and scalp health, and smells amazing. You’re all set to take a luxurious mermaid bath in the river, right? Wrong. Even with a biodegradable, natural product, you still should not contaminate any waterway with any hygiene product. This includes soap, conditioner, body wash, castile soap, lye soap, and any other hygiene product.

Why Avoid Using Hygiene Products Directly in Waterways?

Even biodegradable ingredients need to be filtered through the soil to break down properly. The soil plays a crucial role in the biodegradation process. Using these products in an open waterway can harm the environment and the organisms living in it, such as insects, fish, and amphibians.

Steps to Use Biodegradable Soap/Shampoo Outside

To responsibly use a biodegradable soap, conditioner, or shampoo while camping, van-lifing, or hiking, follow these steps:

  1. Prepare Your Supplies: Have a container for water, such as a bowl, pitcher or a water bottle.
  2. Wet Your Hair: Take a dip in the water to thoroughly wet your hair. Fill your bowl or water bottle with water.
  3. Move Away from the Water: Exit the water and walk 10-15 feet away from the water’s edge.
  4. Lather Up: Lather your shampoo bar in your hair thoroughly, massaging your scalp.
  5. Rinse: Either dip your hair/head into the bowl to rinse or use the water bottle to pour water over your hair and rinse it clean.

Why This Method Works

By moving away from the water's edge and using a container to rinse, you allow the biodegradable soap to filter through the soil and break down completely. This method ensures you’re protecting water-dwelling wildlife while enjoying clean, healthy hair.

Enjoy Your Eco-Friendly Adventure

Now you can rest easy in your hammock, tent, camper or van, knowing you didn’t harm the environment or negatively affect any aquatic wildlife. Happy adventuring!
