Frequently asked questions
When sourced, extracted, and formulated properly, mushroom coffee can provide real functional support.
Many commercial blends use subtherapeutic doses, non-extracted powders, or myceliated grain, all of which contain far fewer of the active compounds than those found in the whole fruiting bodies that we use at Birch Boys.
Not all blends are created equal.
- Effective Amounts: Look for 500-1000mg of mushroom extract per serving
- Fruiting Body: Opt for fruiting body, not myceliated grain or fermented biomass
- In-House Extraction: Choose in-house extraction over imported, pre-made powders
- Transparent Sourcing: Choose extracts sourced and made in the USA for purity and sustainability

It should taste like great coffee. After testing more than 50 blends, we developed a mushroom coffee that's smooth, balanced, and easy to drink. Our regular blend offers notes of cocoa with a clean finish, while our decaf has hints of plantain and caramelized sugar. You get the benefits of functional mushrooms without the earthy, bitter flavor many people expect.
Most quality mushroom coffees contain between 300 and 750 mg of mushroom extract per serving, though the exact amount depends on the blend and the mushrooms being used. Be careful comparing extracts to raw mushroom powder, as extracts are much more concentrated. Look for brands that clearly explain both the amount of mushroom extract you're getting and how it was made.

Lion’s Mane is generally well tolerated, but allergic-type reactions—including skin rash, itching, or respiratory symptoms—can occur in sensitive individuals, especially those with mushroom allergies. Gastrointestinal upset is also possible.
