What's Inside Real Mushroom Coffee?

Mushroom coffee is more than just a trend—it's a whole class of functional beverages that blends roasted coffee with extracts from adaptogenic fungi like Chaga, Lion's Mane, and Turkey Tail. Instead of relying on caffeine alone, these blends offer bioactive compounds that support energy, focus, and resilience.*

While many brands rely on pre-made powders from overseas or pad their blends with fillers and flavoring agents, Birch Boys we strive to make mushroom coffee the right way. The difference lies in how it's made and what's actually in it—where the mushrooms are sourced from, the extraction process, and the final concentration of the product.

Benefits of Mushroom Coffee

Mushroom coffee appeals to people looking for a more balanced way to start the day. Unlike regular coffee, which delivers a spike of caffeine followed by a crash, mushroom coffee can provide:

- Sustained physical energy* (with or without caffeine)

- Optimized mental energy*

Does Mushroom Coffee Work?

When sourced, extracted, and formulated properly, mushroom coffee can provide real functional support.

The functional potential of mushroom coffee depends entirely on the quality, amount, and extraction of the mushrooms used. Many commercial blends use subtherapeutic doses, unextracted powders, or myceliated grain, all of which contain far fewer of the active compounds than those found in the whole fruiting bodies that we use at Birch Boys.

Not all blends are created equal. Here’s how to tell which ones are worth drinking—and why we make ours differently.

Effective Mushroom Amounts

Look for 500-2,000mg of mushroom extract per serving

White silhouette of several mushrooms.

Fruiting
Body

Opt for fruiting body, not myceliated grain or fermented biomass

In-House
Extraction

Choose in-house extraction over imported, pre-made powders

Transparent
Sourcing

Choose extracts sourced and made in the USA for purity and sustainability

Birch Boys coffee checks every one of these boxes. We gently extract our mushrooms in-house, use zero fillers or imported powders, and clearly state the amount of fruiting body extract (680mg) in every cup.

The result: a brew that delivers smooth taste and real functional benefits without compromise.

Not all extracts are created equal

Extracts isolate beneficial compounds from fungi and remove the unesessary bulk. The amount of compounds available in the resulting extract depends entirely on how much raw material is used. Therefore, the final weight of the extract doesn't reflect how much fungi went into it.

Who Should Avoid Mushroom Coffee?

Mushroom coffee isn’t for everyone. While most people tolerate it well, certain individuals should avoid or limit functional mushroom products.

You should talk to a healthcare provider before using mushroom coffee if you:

- Are using medications to regulate blood sugar and/or have a history of DKA.

- Take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs (e.g., Warfarin, aspirin)Use immunosuppressants, such as post-transplant medications
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have known mushroom allergies

Chaga contains blood-modulating compounds* and oxalates, which may not be suitable for people with kidney issues or clotting concerns.

Lion’s Mane is generally well tolerated, but allergic-type reactions—including skin rash, itching, or respiratory symptoms—can occur in sensitive individuals, especially those with mushroom allergies. Gastrointestinal upset is also possible.

Turkey Tail is generally well tolerated, even in clinical settings, and has a long history of safe use. However, individual responses to any mushroom can vary.

If you're new to functional mushrooms, start with a small serving and monitor how you feel. We don’t recommend consuming more than three cups of mushroom coffee per day.
